Molecular Layer Interneurons: Key Elements of Cerebellar Network Computation and Behavior

نویسندگان

چکیده

• Molecular layer interneurons (MLIs) participate in spatially structured networks via chemical and electrical synapses. Clusters of MLIs converge to control the temporal spatial pattern Purkinje cell activity cerebellum. These MLI circuits mediate a number behavioral functions, including motor coordination learning. play an important role cerebellar information processing by controlling (PC) inhibitory synaptic transmission. A local network, constructed from both synapses, is organized into clusters that amplify feedforward lateral inhibition shape patterns PC activity. Several recent vivo studies indicate such contribute not only sensorimotor processing, but also precise cognitive processes. Here, we review current understanding organization their roles function mammalian

Cerebellar molecular layer interneurons - computational properties and roles in learning.

In recent years there has been an increased interest in the function of inhibitory interneurons. In the cerebellum this interest has been paired with successes in obtaining recordings from these neurons in vivo and genetic manipulations to probe their function during behavioral tasks such as motor learning. This review focuses on a synthesis of recent findings on the computational properties th...

A spiking network model of cerebellar Purkinje cells and molecular layer interneurons exhibiting irregular firing

While the anatomy of the cerebellar microcircuit is well-studied, how it implements cerebellar function is not understood. A number of models have been proposed to describe this mechanism but few emphasize the role of the vast network Purkinje cells (PKJs) form with the molecular layer interneurons (MLIs)-the stellate and basket cells. We propose a model of the MLI-PKJ network composed of simpl...

Bistable network behavior of layer I interneurons in auditory cortex.

GABAergic interneurons in many areas of the neocortex are mutually connected via chemical and electrical synapses. Previous computational studies have explored how these coupling parameters influence the firing patterns of interneuronal networks. These models have predicted that the stable states of such interneuronal networks will be either synchrony (near zero phase lag) or antisynchrony (pha...

Properties and molecular identity of NMDA receptors at synaptic and non-synaptic inputs in cerebellar molecular layer interneurons

N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) in cerebellar molecular layer interneurons (MLIs) are expressed and activated in unusual ways: at parallel fibre (PF) synapses they are only recruited by repetitive stimuli, suggesting an extrasynaptic location, whereas their activation by climbing fibre is purely mediated by spillover. NMDARs are thought to play an important role in plasticity at differe...

Compromised Survival of Cerebellar Molecular Layer Interneurons Lacking GDNF Receptors GFRα1 or RET Impairs Normal Cerebellar Motor Learning

The role of neurotrophic factors as endogenous survival proteins for brain neurons remains contentious. In the cerebellum, the signals controlling survival of molecular layer interneurons (MLIs) are unknown, and direct evidence for the requirement of a full complement of MLIs for normal cerebellar function and motor learning has been lacking. Here, we show that Purkinje cells (PCs), the target ...
